He has been awarded with a Ph.D. degree from the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan in 2004. His specialization is Electrochemistry. He did postdoctoral research work for > 4 years. His research interest includes designing materials for supercapacitors, electrocatalytic water splitting and water treatment applications, and modification of cellulose and atmospheric chemistry. He is the author of 100 peer-reviewed papers. He published 17 book chapters. One patent is of his credit. His first edited book “Trends in Polyaniline Research” and six book chapters have been published by Nova Science Publishers and CRC press, USA. He is one of the authors of Chemistry Textbook (Class IX-X) distributed by National Curriculum and Textbook Board, Bangladesh (NCTB). More than 150 abstracts on his research work have been published in the proceedings of different national and international conferences. Dr. Islam involves with several research projects supported by different organizations including TWAS, Bangladesh Govt.-World Bank-UGC, ministry of science and technology, ministry of education and Bose Centre at DU and so on. He has been acting as the coordinator of the air quality monitoring and research station established at the centre for advance research in sciences (CARS), DU with the supports of Wuppertal University, Germany and Bangladesh Govt.-World Bank. Dr Islam is the Editor of the Bangladesh Journal of Scientific Research and the member of editorial board of Journal of Science and Technology Research (JSTR). He is acting as the Joint-Secretary of the Bangladesh Association for the Advancement of Science (BAAS).
